"Let the battered heart rejoice"

Kindred Souls

How wonderful and rare it is
In this odd and untidy earth
To find a soul akin to yours,
That understands your wild mirth

How wonderful and rare as well,
And tragic as the winter rain
To find a soul that also shares
The hollow echo of your pain

On Wanting to Follow and Staying Behind

I have rudely been detached
From this world of mice and men
And have found that only God
Now can keep me tethered.
What a solemn irony,
That what holds me here from Him
Now He is the only thing
Holds the two together.
Yet, still, I am set afloat
Caught adrift the in-between
Straddling the empty void,
Void of motivation,
While one hand still clings to earth
Through the barrel-blasted dream
Bound by duty’s golden noose,
Heart-struck obligation.
I am outcast from this world.
Now, perhaps, I understand
Why we are called aliens,
Working foreign soil.
What a long and twisted way
Is the dismal work of man,
Lives bound to a service that
Tragedy can roil.
