"Let the battered heart rejoice"

Shadow Dancer

She meant to fall asleep before the moon
But words were dancing in her head
and she had danced alone so long
She clenched the slipping fingers of thought
And twirled between broken echoes
of unanswered questions
Swaying to the haunting melody of her heart
Head spinning, she spun on
and refused to quit the dance
Until the disapproving eye of dawn
glared through the window
And she turned from the thoughts of the day
unwilling to flee her dark partner
She sank into the arms of a dream

Absent Mind

My mind has gone out for a stroll,
I don’t know when it will return.
It wandered down a trail of dreams
And left its duty for concern.
It may have settled in the wood,
And hidden deep amidst the trees,
To sit awhile, unperturbed,
Beneath the shade of memories.
Or, may haps, it has made its way
To rest upon the ocean shore,
Take in the sea of shifting thought
And waves of worries that will roar.
My mind has gone out wandering
Around some unexpected bend,
It has escaped into the mist.
Who knows if it may come again?

Day Dreaming

I called my thoughts all in
And scolded them for wand’ring so,
Knowing that I had bid them roam…
But not so far as they should go
Beyond the call of duty’s voice
Or passed what fields they meant to sew.
I asked that next time they take care…
They never listen, though.
